About Tempered Glass.
Fully tempered glass is about four times as strong as annealed glass of the same thickness and configuration. Its residual surface compression must be over 10,000 PSI for 6mm, according to ASTM C 1048. Please contact Guardian for thicker glass standards.
When broken, tempered glass fragments are relatively small and less likely to cause serious injury, so it qualifies under building codes as “safety glass.” Architects often specify heat-strengthened glass for commercial projects, however, to reduce the risk of spontaneous breakage.
Our Advanced Architectural Glass is designed so it can be tempered by our network of independent SunGuard Select Fabricators. That means processing can be done more quickly and closer to your project site, for faster replacements and shorter lead times.
Please note that tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled after the heat treatment process. Alterations such as edge grinding, sand blasting or acid etching can also cause premature failure.
